As-built drawings record what was actually built, not what was first designed. Changes made during construction, such as a shifted column, a rerouted pipe or an added opening, are marked on them with correct dimensions and levels. They are usually prepared by the contractor and checked by the consultant.
They are especially important for concealed services: plumbing, electrical conduits, drainage and underground lines. Years later, the owner or facility team relies on them to repair or modify the building without breaking walls in the wrong place. Photos of services taken before plastering are a useful companion to the drawings.
Keep as-builts current as work progresses rather than recreating them at the end from memory. Link each change to the RFI, instruction or revised drawing behind it, and hand them over with the rest of the completion documents. A drawing register with versions makes this much easier to manage.
