Snag list meaning in construction

Punch list

A snag list is a list of small defects and unfinished items found during inspection near completion, to be fixed before handover.

A snag list (also called a punch list) is made when work is nearly complete. The engineer, client or their representative walks each flat, room or area and lists what is wrong or unfinished: chipped tiles, a door that does not close, missing switch plates, paint patches, a slow drain.

Each snag should have a location, a clear description, a photo, who will fix it and a target date. The list is re-inspected and items are closed one by one; handover happens when it is cleared or the remaining items are agreed.

Snags found after handover are dealt with under the defects liability period. A disciplined internal snag walk before the client walk saves a lot of back and forth. Contractors who clear their own snags first usually hand over faster and with fewer complaints.

Example

Illustrative: "Flat 304, master bath: floor slope towards door, water stagnates. Tiling team. Fix by Friday."
