Measurement book meaning in construction

MB

A measurement book (MB) is the bound record where measurements of work done are written and checked; it is the basis for paying contractor bills.

A measurement book (MB) is where the quantity of each item of work is recorded with its dimensions: location, number, length, breadth, depth and the resulting quantity. In government works it is a numbered, controlled book and the entries are made or checked by the engineer in charge.

Every RA bill and the final bill should trace back to MB entries. Senior engineers often check-measure a part of the entries before a bill is passed, and corrections are made by striking through and initialling, never by erasing. This makes the MB a reliable record if a bill is questioned later.

Private sites may keep measurement sheets instead of a bound book, but the principle is the same: measure what is actually built, against the BOQ item, and record it before it is covered up. Foundations, reinforcement and concealed work cannot be measured once the next layer goes on, so measure and sign them before that happens.

Example

Illustrative entry: "Footing F3, PCC 1:4:8, 6 nos × 1.5 m × 1.5 m × 0.10 m = 1.35 m³."
