A cost code is a short code or name for a cost head, such as 02-Excavation, 05-RCC or 09-Plastering. The project budget is split across cost codes, and every expense, purchase order, work order and wage sheet is tagged with one.
Codes make budget vs actual possible. Without them, spending is one big number per project and you only find out a trade went over budget at the end of the job. With codes, the overrun shows up while there is still time to act on it.
Keep the list short enough that site staff pick the right code without thinking. Align it with your BOQ sections so budgets come straight from the estimate, and use the same codes across projects so jobs can be compared. That comparison is what improves the next estimate.
Example
Illustrative: a cement bill split as ₹40,000 to "RCC" and ₹10,000 to "Masonry", based on where the cement was issued.
